How to backup your data on Windows Phone

We keep a lot of important data on our smartphones. If by any chance we lose any data we have kept in our device it might lead to a lot of trouble. If you are using Windows Phone 8.1 you can backup your data on Windows Phone 8.1 easily. Following an easy tutorial you can create backup of all the important stuff on your Windows Phone 8.1. Using a service provided by Microsoft all your data will be automatically saved to the online cloud which you can access in future in case of emergencies.

You can easily choose how you want to create backup of the data present in your device by going to Settings > Backup. You can also follow the detailed guide shared below to backup your Data on Windows phone.

Apps and Settings

If your device gets corrupted and you lose all your data, the apps which are installed on your smartphone along with the settings which you have chosen to use on your device will matter a lot. Using the backup option you can create backup of the below mentioned things on your Windows Phone.

  • All the applications which are installed on your smartphone, with the high scores which you have created in those apps, the levels which you have completed so you can resume the app after restoring the backup.
  • Password of all the accounts which you are using on your Windows Phone.
  • Call history on your Windows Phone.
  • Layout of the start screen and the theme color of your Windows Phone.
  • Your Internet Explorer favorites.
  • All the custom words which have been added by you in the dictionary of your Windows Phone.
  • All the settings of your Windows Phone which will include messages, photos, email accounts, screen preferences, lock screen and much more.

Note:-

  • Your Windows Phone will wait until the Wi-Fi connection is established on your device and your smartphone is plugged in a charging socket.
  • If you want to start a manual backup you can go to Settings > Backup > Apps + Settings and then enable Settings Backup. Once you are in Settings backup tab you can select Backup now which will start the manual backup on your Windows Phone.
  • If you have not created a new backup on your Windows Phone you will be prompted to create a backup after 3 weeks.

How to turn on apps and settings backup

Follow the steps shared below if you wish to turn on apps and settings backup on your Windows Phone.

  1. Go to the app list of your Windows Phone and then select Settings > Backup
  2. Once you are in Backup tap select Apps + Settings.
  3. To start backup of the settings on your Windows Phone, enable Settings Backup option. If you want to start backup of the apps on your Windows Phone make sure that you have enabled Settings backup and then you can enable App backup.

How to delete backups on your Windows Phone

If you are creating new backups and want to delete the old backups you can follow the steps shared below.

  1. Open the app list on your Windows Phone and then go to Settings > Backup.
  2. Once you are in Backup tab open Apps + Settings and then tap on Manage backups. If you are using Windows Phone 8, you can tap on Advanced option.
  3. If you want to delete the entire backup of your Windows Phone, then tick Settings backup checkbox and then tap on Delete
  4. If you only want to delete the app data on your Windows Phone you can untick Settings backup option and tick app backup checkbox and finally select Delete

If you are deleting the backups following the above mentioned steps only the local copy of the backup will be removed. The backups can be deleted permanently from the One Drive app. To delete backups permanently login to your One drive account and then go to Settings > Options > Device Settings. You will see all the backups which you have created present there. Select the backup which you want to delete from here.

Backing up text messages

All the messages can be automatically backed up to the online cloud. With the help of backups you can restore your conversations to your new Windows Phone. If you are deleting any message from your Windows Phone it will also get deleted from the cloud backup as the messages are always in sync mode.

Follow the steps shared below if you want to backup your text messages.

  1. Go to the app list of your Windows Phone and then tap on Settings > Backup.
  2. Go to Text messages option and then enable Text message backup option from there.

If you are turning off the backup option, the messages which you have saved won’t get deleted. You need to enable the backup option and then delete the messages from your smartphone which will automatically delete all the messages from your backup. If you are using Windows Phone 8 you can also enable or disable the chat backup option.

Backing up Photos and Videos

Using One drive you can automatically upload all your photos and videos and grab them on your computer by logging in to your One drive account. Follow the steps shared below to enable the auto upload option for Photos and videos.

  1. Open the app list on your Windows Phone and then go to Settings > Backup.
  2. Go to Photos + videos option where you will find some options.
    1. If you don’t want to automatically upload all the photos and videos then you should tap on Don’t upload.
    2. If you want to automatically upload all the photos at a resolution which uses less network data and Onedrive space you can select the Good quality
    3. If you want to automatically upload all the photos and videos in the best resolution possible tap on Best quality

Make sure you are having a Wi-Fi connection for automatic upload of your photos and videos. These are the steps which you should follow to backup your data on Windows Phone.
